KWB Iron-Guard
KWB Iron-Guard
Finally the protection handmade knives deserve! Complete corrosion protection and unparalleled durability. KWB Iron-Guard is 100% food safe, approved by the FDA, easy to apply and lasts up to a year with daily use. I expect this first batch will sell out quick, so be sure to get some while you can. For best results be sure to add the surface prep cleaning solution to your order - see options below.
KWB Iron-Guard:
- Corrosion resistance - The coating creates a perfectly sealed surface impervious to moisture and acidic juice which can rust carbon steel and damage surface finishes.
- Durability - Not only is this coating far more permanent than oil or wax, but it actually increases the surface hardness of the material coated, creating long term protection from corrosion, even preventing scratching and increasing edge retention.
- Non stick - The surface feels almost silky to the touch, with far less friction and hydrophobic properties, your knives and tools will perform better and be easier to clean.
- FDA Food safe - The coating bonds directly to the surface on a molecular level, unlike any other coating we've come across. This makes it incredibly durable, non reactive and completely safe for food preparation *once cleaned.
Instructions:
- Although very easy to apply, the quality of the coating is highly dependant on the sjrface preparation so please be sure to follow the steps carefully, and feel free to email us with any questions.
- You will need a clean well ventilated work area, and disposable gloves.
- Thoroughly clean and dry the surface.
- Clean again with the surface prep cleaning solution (see drop down options) on a paper towel or lint free cloth - on a microscopic scale, steel is full of pits and caves and is very porus. These pours need to be clean and coated for optimum protection. Our cleaning solution removes moisture as well as contaminants leaving behind a perfectly prepped surface. Leave to dry for 20 minutes, or gently heat with a hair dryer to ensure the cleaning solution has completely evaporated. Even if it looks dry on the surface, the pores can hold moisture and dirt like a cave in a rocky landscape.
- Apply the coating - soak a small piece of cloth or one of the included application pads, it should be thoroughly saturated, but not dripping. Being very careful of any sharp edges, begin to work the coating into the steel. The coating may seem to evaporate quickly at first, this is it soaking in and reacting with the steel. Keep applying until you're left with an even surface that stays wet for a minute or two, finishing with long even stokes.
- Minimum bonding time of 12 hours although 24 is recommended, and longer will increase durability.
- Heat. This coating is perfect for knives and cutting tools and for that, warming with a hair dryer or a few passes with a heat gun will be sufficient. Higher temperatures will produce slightly higher durability but please check the temperature rating of your item - cutting tools should be kept below 150c, and most handle materials shouldn't be heated beyond what's comfortable to touch.
- Rinse thoroughly with water to cure/neutralist the coating, and wash away any left over spirit residue. Water should now run off the surface with ease, if any areas do not bead water, try cleaning with dish soap and a soft non abrasive sponge, and dry with a soft towel. If you have any issues, either try the process again paying extra attention to the cleaning steps, or send us an email.
